Took J to the GI today...

Well.... he is not growing well at all. We finally got into see a GI today. Clothed, he weighed 25.75 lbs, and was 36 inches tall. Considering his age, that put his BMI below the 3rd %tile, which is bad. That is considered to be quite underweight. That means that he is not longer, just small, or small for stature, or short, or any of those, he is very much underweight for his size even. She did not like that one bit.
She was a bit shocked by the lack of progress we have made before now. You could tell that, while she didn't feel we were in any huge life threatening situation, she def. was not taking the let's wait it out and see stance. I finally feel like someone has finally said "you know, I see what you are saying, something is not quite right about this"... no panic, but not indifferent either.... THANK YOU!
Now the torturous part.... trying to figure out what is going on. 1st she thinks we need to see if he IS capable of gaining weight when enough nutrition is getting into his body. SO, (and this cracked me up), she said she understands that the feeding clinics mean well, but by the time he is 10, he will eat just fine, so ignore them. She said to get him to drink 5-6 cans of pediasure a day, to make sure he gets 1500 calories a day!!! OK, those of you who have met my kid.... um, yeah, 1500 calories... a day..... and if any of you have checked out the price of pediasure.... I am going to really need to go get another job to just pay for it. Insurance doesn't cover it.
so that is for 2 months... if he can gain appropriate amount of weight, well that is good, sort of.... then we just have to figure out how to keep it up... if not, well then we know something medical is going on....
but at the same time, she is also running some tests. No sense just waiting around to see if we can fatten him up. We have been doing that for nearly 4 years now. We tried to get some blood today to start on that, but after two collapsed veins, I took him home. We can try another time. I wasn't going to put him through anymore.
In Oct he will be put under for some GI tests, and we go back in NOV to see her for all test results. and on to the next set of plans.
Endocrinology called right after we got home, and said they just got his records, and they want to see him right away... and apparently right away is in October as well.
so maybe, just maybe this won't be a dead end....
donations for pediasure can be sent to....
just kidding...
We are leaving tonight to head back to NC for Beth and Bryan's Wedding..... Woo Hooo!!!
